Winter Garden Theatre
The story
A Broadway theatre rose from the bones of a horse exchange. The American Horse Exchange, completed in 1896, became the Winter Garden Theatre when it opened in 1911, designed by William Albert Swasey. The real transformation came in 1922, when Herbert J. Krapp remodeled it completely, installing the Adam-style detailing and reshaping the proscenium and stage that define it today. With 1,600 seats and some of the largest backstage facilities on Broadway, it favors grand musical productions. The auditorium interior is now a New York City landmark.
